Getting wrinkles around corners when laying up prepreg

Asked by lturner · June 2026

Whenever I try to lay prepreg into corners or around curved sections, I end up with wrinkles I can't smooth out. Is there a better technique?

Wrinkling is a common challenge over complex shapes, because the fibres naturally resist stretching. The best approach is to work gradually, compacting the material as you go, and to debulk regularly on larger laminates. On more awkward moulds, smaller ply sections or carefully planned overlaps can help the material sit down more easily. Try not to force wrinkles flat, as they can stay locked into the cured laminate and spoil the finish.
