Every time I cut a piece of dry carbon fabric it frays at the edges and I end up with loose fibres everywhere. Is there a proper way to cut it cleanly?
Fraying is the usual complaint with dry woven carbon, and a couple of habits make a big difference. Laying a strip of low-tack masking tape along the cut line and cutting through it binds the tows so the edge stays tidy, and it also lets you mark the line clearly. A sharp dedicated pair of composite shears or a rotary cutter on a mat will give a far cleaner cut than household scissors, which tend to drag the weave. Where you can, cut slightly oversize and trim to the final edge after the fabric is wetted out, as a wetted edge frays far less. Keeping a blade or scissors just for carbon is worth it, because the fibre blunts an edge quickly.
