Continuous lamination

A process in which resin, reinforcement and surface films are combined between moving carrier films and cured in-line as a continuous flat or profiled sheet. It is the method by which translucent GRP rooflight sheeting and flat GRP panel stock are produced.

Glass reinforced plastic

GRP

A composite of glass fibre reinforcement in a polymer matrix, most commonly polyester or vinyl ester resin. GRP is widely specified for boat hulls, tanks, enclosures, cladding and cold-applied flat roofing thanks to its corrosion resistance, mouldability and moderate cost.

Pultrusion

A continuous process in which fibre reinforcement is drawn through a resin bath and a heated die, curing into a constant cross-section profile such as a rod, tube or structural section. It gives very high fibre alignment along the pull direction and suits long production runs.

Gelcoat

A pigmented, resin-rich surface coat applied to the mould face before laminating, which cures to form the smooth, weather-resistant outer surface of a GRP moulding. It protects the underlying laminate from moisture and UV exposure and provides the colour and gloss of the finished part.

Hand lay-up

An open-mould process in which layers of dry reinforcement are placed in the mould by hand and wetted out with liquid resin using brushes and rollers before curing, usually at ambient temperature. It is the simplest and most widely used method of producing GRP laminates, including site-applied GRP roofing.
