Density

The mass of a material per unit volume. Density drives weight-critical design decisions and, combined with mechanical properties, determines the specific strength and stiffness on which composites compete with metals.

Specific strength

A material's strength divided by its density, commonly called the strength-to-weight ratio. High specific strength is the principal reason fibre-reinforced composites displace metals in weight-critical aerospace, motorsport and marine structures.

Sandwich structure

A composite construction in which two thin, stiff skins are bonded to a thick, lightweight core such as foam, honeycomb or balsa. Separating the skins raises bending stiffness dramatically for very little added weight.
