Eaves

A board or profile fixed vertically at the roof edge, typically to the ends of the rafters, closing the eaves and usually carrying the rainwater gutter. Fascias are made from timber, cellular PVC, fibre cement or metal.

The underside surface of a building element, most commonly the horizontal board closing the underside of the eaves overhang between the fascia and the wall, often ventilated to allow airflow into the roof void. The term is also used for the underside of slabs, arches and balconies.

A channel that collects rainwater run-off from a roof and conveys it to outlets and downpipes. Gutters may be eaves-mounted, formed as valley or parapet gutters within the roof, or integrated into metal roofing systems, and are sized by rainfall calculation.

The horizontal line at the apex of a pitched roof where two slopes meet, closed with ridge tiles, a formed metal capping or a ventilated ridge system. The detail must weather the junction of the meeting coverings and often provides high-level ventilation to the roof space.
