Liquid-applied waterproofing

Waterproofing formed in situ by applying a liquid resin, typically polyurethane, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), unsaturated polyester or a bitumen-based formulation, by roller, brush or spray, which cures to a seamless elastomeric membrane. Often reinforced locally or throughout with a fleece, it is particularly suited to complex details and refurbishment over existing coverings.

GRP

A cold-applied roof waterproofing system in which glass fibre reinforcement, usually chopped strand mat, is laminated in situ with catalysed unsaturated polyester resin over a suitable deck, then finished with a pigmented topcoat. It produces a seamless, rigid covering commonly used on domestic flat roofs, valley gutters and preformed edge trims.

Waterproofing detail

A localised element of a roof or below-ground waterproofing system where the continuous field membrane is interrupted or terminated, such as upstands, penetrations, outlets, movement joints and edges. Details demand specific design and careful workmanship, and they are where most waterproofing failures originate.

Roof penetration

Any element that passes through the roof waterproofing, such as soil vent pipes, flues, cables, plant supports and drainage outlets. Each penetration must be individually sealed, typically with upstands, sleeves, preformed collars or liquid-applied detailing, and penetrations are a leading location for leaks.

Substrate

The surface onto which a coating, membrane, adhesive or covering is applied. In roofing this may be the structural deck, insulation, screed or an existing waterproofing layer; substrate condition, priming and compatibility govern adhesion and long-term performance.
