Thixotropy

The property of becoming thinner when stirred or sheared and recovering viscosity at rest. Thixotropic resins, gelcoats and adhesives can be brushed or spread easily yet resist sagging or draining on vertical surfaces; fumed silica is the usual thixotropic additive.

Filler

A particulate material blended into a resin, adhesive or sealant to modify its properties or reduce cost, for example calcium carbonate for bulk, fumed silica for thixotropy, or hollow microspheres for lightweight fairing compounds. Fillers also help control shrinkage, exotherm and sag.

Gelcoat

A pigmented, resin-rich surface coat applied to the mould face before laminating, which cures to form the smooth, weather-resistant outer surface of a GRP moulding. It protects the underlying laminate from moisture and UV exposure and provides the colour and gloss of the finished part.
