Two-pack coating2K

A coating supplied as two components, a base and a curing agent, that are mixed immediately before use and cure by chemical reaction rather than solely by solvent evaporation. Epoxy and polyurethane two-pack coatings dominate high performance protective and refinish work, and once mixed they must be applied within the pot life.

Also known as: two-component coating, 2K coating, twin-pack coating

Pot life

The length of time a mixed, reactive resin or adhesive remains usable in the mixing vessel before it thickens beyond application. Pot life shortens as temperature and mixed quantity increase, because the curing reaction generates its own heat.

Epoxy resin

A thermosetting resin based on molecules containing epoxide groups, cured by reaction with a hardener such as an amine or anhydride. Valued for strong adhesion, low cure shrinkage, chemical resistance and high mechanical performance, it is widely used in structural adhesives, laminating resins, coatings and composite matrices.

Polyurethane

PU

A broad polymer family formed by reacting isocyanates with polyols, producing everything from soft foams and elastomers to rigid plastics, adhesives, sealants and coatings. In construction and roofing it appears as insulation foam, liquid-applied waterproofing membranes and flexible adhesives, and many one-part grades cure with ambient moisture.

Topcoat

The final coat of a coating system, providing the specified colour, gloss and resistance to weathering, ultraviolet light and chemical exposure. It is the system's first line of defence against the environment and largely determines how the finish looks over time.
