I've been using a standard epoxy for years and I'm thinking about trying a bio-based one to lower the footprint a bit. My worry is whether it'll wet out and cure the same or whether I'm signing up for a load of trial and error mid-project.
Fair worry, and the straight answer is that it varies. Bio-based resins are not one single thing, so the bio content can come from different feedstocks and sit anywhere from a small percentage to a large fraction, which means some behave as near drop-in replacements while others differ in viscosity, wet-out, pot life or cure schedule. A near drop-in will feel familiar on the bench, whereas a higher bio-content system might want a slightly different temperature or a longer cure to reach full properties. Best practice is never to trial a new resin for the first time on the actual job, so mix a small test laminate first and check wet-out, cure and finish before you commit.
