Fusion bonded epoxyFBE

A thermosetting epoxy powder coating applied electrostatically to preheated steel, on which it melts, flows and cures to form a continuous film. It is a standard factory applied coating for buried and subsea pipelines and for corrosion protected reinforcing bar.

Also known as: fusion-bonded epoxy coating, FBE coating

Related terms

Powder coating

A dry finishing process in which electrostatically charged powder, commonly polyester, epoxy or hybrid chemistry, is sprayed onto an earthed component and then fused and cured in an oven to form a continuous film. The process is essentially solvent free and allows overspray to be recovered and reused.

Holiday (coating defect)

A discontinuity in a protective coating, such as a pinhole, void, crack or excessively thin spot, that exposes the substrate to the environment. Holidays are located with low voltage wet sponge or high voltage spark test instruments, particularly on pipeline coatings and tank linings.

Cathodic protection

CP

An electrochemical technique for controlling corrosion by making the metal structure the cathode of an electrochemical cell, using either sacrificial anodes or an impressed current system. It is widely combined with protective coatings on pipelines, ships, jetties and offshore structures.

Epoxy resin

A thermosetting resin based on molecules containing epoxide groups, cured by reaction with a hardener such as an amine or anhydride. Valued for strong adhesion, low cure shrinkage, chemical resistance and high mechanical performance, it is widely used in structural adhesives, laminating resins, coatings and composite matrices.
