Powder coating

A dry finishing process in which electrostatically charged powder, commonly polyester, epoxy or hybrid chemistry, is sprayed onto an earthed component and then fused and cured in an oven to form a continuous film. The process is essentially solvent free and allows overspray to be recovered and reused.

Related terms

Electrocoating

An immersion painting process in which electrically charged paint particles deposit onto a conductive component under an applied voltage, producing a uniform film that reaches recesses and box sections. It is the standard priming process for car bodies and is also used on many industrial components.

FBE

A thermosetting epoxy powder coating applied electrostatically to preheated steel, on which it melts, flows and cures to form a continuous film. It is a standard factory applied coating for buried and subsea pipelines and for corrosion protected reinforcing bar.

Coil coating

A continuous, factory controlled process in which paint is roller applied to coiled metal strip, cured in ovens and rewound before the strip is cut and formed into components. It is the basis of pre-finished steel and aluminium sheet used for roofing, cladding and rainwater goods.

Anodising

An electrolytic process that thickens and controls the natural oxide film on aluminium and certain other metals, improving corrosion and wear resistance and allowing the surface to be coloured by dyeing before sealing. It is widely specified for architectural aluminium and for aerospace components.
